Junior Unit

Our Junior Unit Unit program is divided into Junior Unit B (3rd grade) and Junior Unit A (4th and 5th grades).

Junior Unit B
Third grade is a transitional year in a child’s cognitive life. Students are beginning to see the world from a broader perspective. They are interested in issues of fairness and justice, and can manage more than one concept at a time, such as “long ago and far away.” This developmental stage allows us to take our third graders back in time and look at all the previous knowledge they learned about communities and Philadelphia today and take a more historical look at our country’s foundations. There isn’t a better place to go to school and learn about that than right here in Center City!

Junior Unit A
In this mixed-aged unit, our fourth and fifth graders are moving toward becoming more comfortable and confident learners. Increasingly more solid in their basic skills as readers, writers, and mathematicians, students are ready for the challenges of longer, more complex project work. Socially, friendship and fairness issues are constantly being played out, and the balance between cooperation and competition can be difficult to achieve. As students, they still want to please their teachers, but at the same time they begin to explore their independence. The Junior Unit A program recognizes these developmental stages as critically important and supports students during this period of remarkable growth.
