Primary Unit A, B, and C

Our Primary Unit A, B, and C classrooms, each with two teachers, are mixed-aged classrooms of first and second graders.  When they leave kindergarten, their world at TPS expands from the school and community into the larger world of the neighborhood and the city of Philadelphia.  First and second graders are in a stage of rapid physical and cognitive growth that brings great bursts of energy, developing skills, and newfound confidence.  This builds a growing foundation for social maturity and academic learning away from the classroom and into a broader community of influence and experiences.

The combined first/second grade structure provides students and teachers with many benefits.  It allows our students the chance to stay with one set of teachers for two years.  Students returning to a familiar classroom and familiar teachers feel the confidence to get started right away and take a leadership role in the class.  Teachers have the opportunity to partner with families for two years.  Vertical grouping gives our students increased opportunities to learn with others who are reaching similar developmental milestones in physical, social/emotional, and cognitive domains.  It gives both our older and younger children opportunities to learn from and teach one another.
