Kindergarten students attend music classes twice a week. In addition to cultivating a love of music making, the curriculum is designed to help students develop their singing voices, sharpen their listening skills, practice creative movement, and learn to play a steady beat on a variety of instruments. The children are taught very fundamental musical notation and symbols, and they are introduced to the families of instruments and the individual instruments within the family.
Music classes are a very active time indeed, filled with song, instrument playing, and dancing. Typical in-class activities include listening to a selection of music and describing its sound, listening for particular instruments, moving to the beat of the music, and accompanying music with rhythm instruments. All types of music are explored, from folk to classical.
