Physical Education

The physical education program for kindergarten students is designed to build on preschool instruction by introducing more advanced skill sets related to conduct, movement, and strategy. The program seeks to help young children develop awareness of responsible, thoughtful conduct and to help them attain the skills and knowledge to be physically active as part of a healthy lifestyle.

In twice-weekly classes, students learn a variety of warm-up routines and explore what it means to be on a team, how to switch sides, and how to take turns with positions. They practice concepts of right and left, contra-lateral movement patterns (for example, right hand to left knee), and locomotor movements, such as skipping, galloping, stopping, and pivoting. Modified games teach the foundations of relays, passing and receiving, goal attack/defense, and running to a base. The children also learn to follow verbal and musical cues to perform simple dances.
