Theme

The first phase of the theme sequence at The Philadelphia School–– the “Here and Now” ––begins in preschool and continues through second grade.  It is designed to offer our youngest learners first-hand experience with topics they can see and touch through in-depth studies of our families, our school, our community, and the City of Philadelphia.

Our School, Our Community—the theme in kindergarten-- introduces expanded networks of families, schools, neighborhoods, and communities. Kindergarten embraces this lens of growing circles of influence, roles, and responsibilities as it develops program, organizes resources, and creates experiences for our inquisitive five- and six-year-olds.

Our warm and caring teachers guide the children as they navigate the social interactions that are so important in the kindergarten year. Embedded in our theme is attention to helping children develop problem-solving and negotiating skills required to cement relationships as their sense of the world expands. The kindergarten classroom provides a supportive context in which students grow as individuals and develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and others. Discussion and project work lead children to an understanding of what it means to be a responsible member of a community.

Our School, Our Community engenders a sense of belonging through meaningful activities, partnerships among students, and a classroom environment that ensures that children respect and value the interests, choices, and cultural background of others. Teachers help the children understand the responsibilities and challenges that are part of being a member of any group. It is our goal that children view kindness, inclusivity, equity, and justice as essential elements in a healthy and vibrant community.

Project work allows for children to be grouped in a variety of ways (partners, small groups, whole class). This flexibility in grouping broadens academic and social interactions.
