Executive Director Announced: On March 5, Darren Spielman '86 (and a TPS parent and board officer) will become executive director of The Philadelphia Fund, whose mission is to improve the quality of public education in Philadelphia and the region so that youth are prepared for college and careers.

Big Apple Picks Philly Transplants: Read about three alums working for the Bloomberg administration in NYC.

Blog for Foodies: Laura Loesch-Quinten '02 chronicles her adventures in the New York culinary world and beyond in her blog gourmette•nyc. Check it out. (There are some great recipes there.)

Nomination for Fellowship: Oliver Bartlett Backes '04, a senior at University of Pennsylvania studying International Relations, Diplomatic History, and Russian, was chosen by the UPENN faculty to represent the university in competition for a prestigious fellowship with the Carnegie Institute of International Peace in Washington D.C., a global think tank. Oliver was chosen from a large pool of highly qualified UPENN applicants.

Business in Brazil: Lee Jacobs '00 has founded a new business, Colingo, a service that helps those trying to learn English have the opportunity to converse regularly with native speakers. Read his article about it in Techcrunch.

Alumna Runner: On December 4, Lucy Guida '09 joined the TPS You Go Girls club in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters 5k on Boat House Row. Eighteen girls from the empowerment running program ran along with 3 members of the TPS middle school track team, 1 alumni, and 23 parents, Lucy came in first among females in the 19 and under age group. Her younger sister came in first among the You Go Girls.

Beef Jerky and the Arts: Brooklynite Leah Sandals '99 not only has a full-time job consulting for arts organizations, but she is also one of the entrepreneurs behind SlantShack – which, according to its website is "an artisanal company offering 100% grass-fed beef jerky made from all-natural ingredients and inventor of the only online jerky customization machine in the universe." Happy Hour 2011: It was great to see so many alumni on November 25 at the Happy Hour at Marathon Grill at 10th & Walnut. Thank you, Jaco Cooper '99 and Sam Huntington '98 for organizing the event. Thank you, Cary Borish, for donating the space and appetizers. The day after Thanksgiving is the traditional day for alumni 21-years-old and older to get together at a local restaurant for drinks, appetizers, and conversation.

Alumni Thanksgiving Feast:
This new event, with lasagna made by Michael Berman '84 and Carey Huntington '94, was designed to bring back those wonderful memories of lasagna and brownies at the TPS Thanksgiving Feast. Held at TPS, it attracted several families; it was not only a feast but a playdate for the under-5 set. It was great to see Cara Leibovitz '84 and her family there; Cara lives in Montreal.

Across the Pond: Katherine Latta '98 married Tom Pountney (whom she met at Oxford) in Cheltenham, England on May 28.  Her brother, James '01, was a member of the wedding party.  Katherine wrote us: "Tom and I are living and working in Cheltenham. I work for a company called UK NARIC (www.naric.org.uk), which is involved in researching education systems around the globe and then comparing them to the United Kingdom so that schools/colleges/employers can work out what level of education a person has attained compared to the levels in the UK (e.g., U.S. Bachelor's degree? That's the same level of education as a U.K. Bachelor's degree.  I work on researching professional education."

Michigan Vows: Judah Ferst '97 married Rebecca Elkus on November 12, 2011. The wedding party included Judah's sisters Devra '99 and Sarah '03, as well as TPS classmate Amanda Pitt '97.

Pasadena Wedding: Mac Marston '93 married Shauna Mecartea on November 5, 2011.  Ben West '93 was his best man. Mac is a post-doc at Brown University.

Dr. Sachs: Katie Sachs '96 is a medical resident in Denver. CO. She graduated from the UPenn School of Medicine in 2010. Katie and Dan Kubiak were married in 2009.

Skipper: Tanya Banks-Christiansen '94 is the captain of the Sultana, a replica of a 1768 Royal Navy schooner that is used to provide educational programs in history and environmental science for students from around the Chesapeake Bay. Read more about Tanya and her work.

Golf Champion: Philip Arouca '99 is pursuing a career as a professional golfer. He won the Illinois Open this year, his biggest tournament win to date. His brother, David, a 2010 graduate of Union College, is working in Washington, D.C.

National Merit Semifinalists: Tyler Alterhofen '09 and Aryeh Coburn-Soloway '09 were among this year's six semifinalists at Germantown Friends School.

Teaching in Shanghai: Daniel Harlan '03 is in Shanghai, where he is teaching at an English-language school run by a British company called Shane English. Daniel will be teaching English to 4- through 7-year-olds using lots of games, songs, and physical activities.

Back in Philly: Meredith Lissack '92 has moved back to Philly from D.C. with husband Matthew Goldstein and son Liam.

Small World: The Mayor's Office of NYC holds an annual ceremony that recognizes outstanding public projects with awards for excellence in design. Alicia West '97, Director of Capital Projects for the NYC Design Commission, was one of the organizers of this year's event, which was held at the Museum of the Moving Image, which was an award recipient and whose executive director is Carl Goodman '80.

Cinematography by Julian King: American Animal was a selected film at the Gen Art Film Festival in New York on June 13. Julian King '97 is the cinematographer, producing partner, and co-editor.

From the Harvard Gazette: Annie Douglas ’04 was named one of two David and Mimi Aloian Memorial Scholars at Harvard University. She will be honored at the Harvard Alumni Association’s fall dinner. The criteria for the award reflect the traits valued and embodied by the late David and Mimi Aloian — thoughtful leadership and special contributions to the quality of life in the Houses. Sounds like the Annie we knew!

Wedding News: According to his cousin Samir Taylor '11, Cyril Wiggins '93 was married on May 14, 2011, to Breanne Wasenar. Rachel Nierman '97 was married to Ophir Barone on July 3, 2011.

Three New Oberlin Alumni: The Oberlin graduating class of 2011 included three TPS alums from the Class of 2003: (from left to right) David Field, Kelly Crimmins, and Andrew Roth.

Commencement Speaker: Michael Lefevre '03, president of the the student government at Duke University, was selected by his classmates as student commencement speaker during graduation ceremonies on May 15, 2011. Here is a video of his speech; it starts around minute 38.

Science Fair Winner: As part of the ninth grade Physics Olympics at Germantown Friends School, Ila Kumar '10 and her two teammates assembled a record-breaking tower that weighed only 75 grams—but was able to support 340 pounds! The task was to build atower that was tested for how much weight it would hold relative to its own weight.

Another Class of 1993 Baby: Sarah Campbell Cooper and Max Cooper (our first pair of TPS classmates to marry each other) are the parents of Julius Hugo Cooper, who was born in April 2011. We sent Julius his first TPS t-shirt (it is teeny tiny). Alums, let TPS know if there is a new (or relatively new!) baby in the family, and we will make sure to send a t-sirt.

White House Staffer: When our eighth graders were in Washington in early April, Michael Block-Rabinovich '95, a deputy director in the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, arranged for them to meet with White House staffers and interns. Michael and his colleagues talked about their work and their "roads" to the White House.

Class of 1997 Artists: What an amazing class!  Check out Matt Colaizzo's blog containing his beautiful artwork. And listen to a track by Matt Hollenberg's band iNFiNiEN.

Alum Wins Prestigious Mathematics Prize: Daniel Spielman '84, professor of computer science and applied mathematics at Yale University, has won the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, one of the highest honors in the field of mathematics. Read more.

Fellowship Winner: Ben West '93, an attorney at the Legal Aid Society in Manhattan, won the 2010 Public Service Fellowship Essay Competition sponsored by the New York County Lawyers' Association.

New Zealand Reunion: Todd Freedman '01 (right) met up with TPS classmate Zev Fishman in New Zealand, where Zev's family moved after his graduation from TPS. Todd spent some time in New Zealand away from his Peace Corps assignment in Tonga.
