Family GroupsAn important way that The Philadelphia School fosters a sense of community is through family groups. A family group, made up of children from different age groups and led by a Middle School student, experiences many traditional activities together (All-School Schuylkill Center Day, the Thanksgiving Feast, Field Day). Working and celebrating together in mixed-age groups makes those experiences more meaningful and personal. The sense of connectedness between even the youngest of our students and the oldest Middle School student is amazingly strong. Family group circles – made up of three or four family groups and two members of the staff – meet regularly to talk, to play, and to prepare for special events. This practice ensures that everyone has a core of schoolmates and teachers across the grades that they know well and trust.
