Notification of Tank Removal at 2501-15 South Street 01/22/10

On July 31, 2008, The Philadelphia School became the owner of 2501-15 South Street, the former site of a Licenses and Inspections maintenance facility owned by the City of Philadelphia School.

The school cleaned the interior areas of the site and planted trees along Naudain and South Streets. We are now in the process of painting the exterior walls and considering a more attractive treatment of the fencing along 25th Street.

As of November 2009, the interior plans for the 2501 South Street property include creating a multipurpose space in the existing garage area and creating a large garden space to extend our “country classroom” into the city. Community service will be a component of the garden project.

Other components of the building project include enhancement of the entrance to the school’s current entrance on Lombard Street, early childhood classrooms at the new site, and a library at 2501 Lombard Street.  The process has moved a little slower than first expected, but that was to be expected with the downturn in the economy last fall.

The schematic design phase has been completed. Fund-raising efforts are in the beginning phase and results thus far are positive predictors for a successful campaign.  The school size model remains the same as presented in the school 2008 Strategic Plan; currently there are 367 students, and in the next 5 to 7 years, the school expects to reach its goal of 450.

The school will meet with the broader community when there is design work to show.
