ASEP Programs (Preschool-5)
The After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) at TPS is available for students in preschool through 5th grade from dismissal until pick up every afternoon. ASEP offers a wide range of fun and creative theme-based activities, which integrate visual arts, drama, science, cooking, and music, as well as homework supervision in our Junior Unit Study Hall. Students also enjoy indoor and outdoor games and physical activities in the schoolyard and the gym.
A typical day in ASEP begins with an overview of the many options from which students can choose, including the daily theme-related art or science project, the daily cooking project, free-choice art, building in our Construction Zone room, make-believe in our Imagination Station, board games, and the ASEP book corner. In addition, students can choose to participate in weekly workshops in such topics as knitting, yoga, music, cartooning, and drama.
Themes are at the core of ASEP. For example, in conjunction with a recent all-school theme, ASEP students learned all about inventions. They learned about the life of Louis Braille and about the alphabet he invented. They created personalized boards with raised Braille units, which spelled out their names, and they discussed how sightless people perceive colors. The read-aloud book of the week was a biography of Helen Keller.
Two snacks are offered during the afternoon, one available at the start of the program and one at around 4:30 p.m. The second snack is often prepared by students and relates to the week's mini-theme.
ASEP Special Programs
Each year ASEP also offers several day-long Special Programs for students in preschool through 5th grade when TPS is closed for teacher conferences and in-service. Each year features a new roster of programs, which, in the past, have included a trip to the restaurant Distrito for a cooking demonstration by Jose Garces; tours of Citizens Bank Park, Herr’s Snack Factory, WXPN Radio Station, and the Helicopter Museum; and outings to Hyland Orchard, The Philadelphia Zoo, and the Franklin Institute.
Programs take place from 9:00 to 3:00 p.m., with extended day available for an additional fee from 3:00-5:30 p.m. Early drop-off is available beginning at 8:30 a.m. for no additional fee.
Please note that Special Program days for preschool and kindergarten students do not involve “off-campus” trips. Instead, the program features age-appropriate, theme-related activities that take place at TPS.
