Dialogue Around Differences

Tuesday evening a group of TPS teachers and administrators attended the Multi-Cultural Resource Center student panel at Shipley called "You Know My Name, but You Don't Know My Story." The discussion centered on the influence of race, class, and sexual identity on the experience of students in independent schools.

Students spoke eloquently and passionately about the complex challenges of developing a positive racial identity, class identity, or gender identity in a situation where your race, socioeconomic group, or sexual identity is not strongly represented among the student body at your school or the community at large.  Students encouraged greater dialogue around these differences and emphasized the importance of ongoing education in schools around these issues.  (Author Brian Jordan)
