When JU-D students saw this graffiti today at our recess playground, they made connections to our morning meeting discussion. "Why would Philadelphians be feeling angry about events happening in a town in Missouri?" they wondered. Students shared what they knew about Ferguson, and rather than pulling apart which story was true, we instead focused on the underlying issues that make this moment relevant to all of us in America. We discussed the high frequency of encounters with police that males with brown skin experience around the country, the challenges that arise when we do not engage with people who are different from us, and the frustrations being felt by many people that this injustice continues. We'll continue to think about this complex topic with our fourth and fifth graders in the coming months.
