Greek Vessels

As part of the study of ancient Greece, fourth and fifth graders designed and constructed a hand-built coil vessel. They learned about the shapes, uses, and designs of ancient Greek pottery and based their designs on their study. The primary focus throughout the process was on intention and craftsmanship. Students followed a plan during construction and refined their coil assemblages accordingly. Surfaces were carefully smoothed, and once the vessels were fired, they were decorated with pens and acrylic paint in a red- or black-figure motif.
