Demystifying the Bicycle Wheel

Art teacher Rick Jacobsen returned to one of preschool classrooms this week for an in-depth discussion of bicycle wheels.  Wearing protective gloves and using special bicycle tools, Rick took apart the hub of the wheel, showing us the axle (and the collection of tiny ball bearings hidden inside) which enable the wheel to turn!  He also showed us what it looks like when a spoke gets broken and introduced us to new bicycle vocabulary: rim, cone, nut, and dust cap. The children were a fascinated audience!
