Pond Studies

The 7th grade persevered at the Schuylkill Center today despite the weather. At Wind Dance Pond, students worked in groups to map the perimeter of the pond. Like the early settlers, we faced physical hardships--mud, rain, and nesting geese.  Unlike the early settlers, we also relied on technology, namely cell phones that had compass applications. By taking compass bearings and pacing off between landmarks, students compiled the data necessary to create a scaled map of the pond. Next week we will work to create a more accurate shoreline and begin thinking about how to map the depth profile of the pond itself. Who knows, perhaps our work will show that it's a suitable body of water for some fishing at our overnight, May 21-22! Our data will tell…
