Dear Parents of Children in Preschool Through Third Grade,
I hope you have had an enjoyable summer and are ready to make that transition back into school mode.
Our first day of school is Wednesday, September 3. It is a full day of school for 1st-8th graders. Preschool and kindergarten students will have a short morning orientation on September 3 and begin a full day on Thursday, September 4.
On Wednesday morning a New Family Breakfast will be held in the Garage from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. If your child is new to TPS, we hope you will drop by. For those of you whose child is in the second preschool/kindergarten session that starts at 10:30, please feel free to bring your child to the coffee – there will be bagels for the children!
Here is the schedule for the first day of school for children in preschool through third grade.
Preschool and Kindergarten: The children will come to school in two small groups for an intimate, short orientation morning. You should have already received a letter letting you know which time your child should come to school: either 8:30-10:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (Please contact Karen Moore, firstname.lastname@example.org if you have not received that notification, or need to make a switch.)
• Preschoolers and their families will enter through the Schwartz Siegel building’s gates on 25th Street and head straight into the preschool classrooms through the porch; there will be staff members to help guide you.
• Kindergarteners and their families will gather at the kindergarten porch, where you will be met by kindergarten teachers, who will escort you and your child into the classrooms. We ask that all families do an in-person, face-to-face drop-off in the Garden the first three days of school, no matter how confident your child may feel about getting to his or her room independently. It’s an ideal time to chat with teachers, make that first face-to-face connection, and connect with other families.
Starting on Thursday, September 4, the supervised Early Risers program is available at 7:30 a.m. in the Schwartz Siegel reception area. Regular drop-off begins at 8 a.m.; optional curbside drop-off (a staff member will assist your child out of the car and into the Garden) will start for kindergartners on Monday, September 8, and for preschoolers in October.
Primary Unit (1st & 2nd grade): On the first day of school Primary Unit students and their families will be invited into their classrooms at 8:10 a.m. This “meet and greet” will give both first- and second-grade students and their families time in the classroom to acquaint or reacquaint themselves with teachers and classmates. Teachers will ring their morning chime at 8:45 a.m., indicating that it’s time to say good-bye to your child so morning meetings can begin in the classrooms. On Thursday, September 4, Primary Unit students will begin their usual routine of gathering in the school yard, playing with friends until it is time to line up and go inside as a class. Early Risers is available starting at 7:30 a.m. Yard gates open at 8:00 a.m., and children head into their classrooms at 8:15 a.m.
Third Grade: Drop-off is business as usual. Early Risers is available starting at 7:30 a.m. Yard gates open at 8:00 a.m., and children head into their classrooms at 8:15 a.m. The teachers, who will have classroom signs, will greet you and your child outside and will walk up to the classrooms together at 8:15 a.m. You should plan to say your good-byes in the Yard. (It may be harder for you, but easier for your child to make the transition that way!)
More specific “back-to-school” information will be available next week, when we launch our brand-new school website.
I look forward to working with you, your children, and the teachers to make this year as enjoyable, engaging, and connected as possible. My main office will remain in the Schwartz Siegel building; this year I will also have a satellite office outside of the 3rd grade, so you’ll be able to catch me in both buildings.
