Dear TPS Families,
Welcome to a new school year! We’re writing as co-chairs of TPS’s Family Diversity Committee, which promotes a more diverse and inclusive school community. Working in collaboration with the school’s administrative team and The Philadelphia School Association (TPSA), the FDC holds regular meetings open to all members of the TPS community, plans diversity-related educational events for parents and students, and coordinates our participation in diversity and equity activities offered around the city.
As many of you may know, last year there were some productive community discussions about how students address adults in and around TPS. For those families new to the school, TPS students have always called their teachers by their first names. From these conversations it became clear that, although it may be common practice for children to call teachers by their first names at TPS, it does not necessarily follow that all TPS parents want students to call them by their first names. As you begin the new school year and meet with other families, we encourage you to ask other parents, “What would you like my child to call you?” Such a simple question acknowledges that our families come from diverse backgrounds with varied cultural practices, and respects these differences.
Here’s wishing you all a great and engaging school year!
