All-School Weekly Note

Staffing News: There is a new face in the Spanish Department.  Maria De Orta has been out sick, and we have hired a long-term substitute, Margaret Dougherty, to cover her classes and to stay on through the remainder of the year – to cover for Amparo Stetina, who we are delighted to announce is expecting her second child in mid-April. Margaret has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and English and a master’s degree in bilingual/bicultural studies – both from LaSalle University. She has taught Spanish at the elementary and high school levels. I hope you will welcome Margaret, congratulate Amparo, and wish Maria a speedy recovery.

Service Activities for MLK, Jr. Day: Thank you to everyone who participated in our service initiatives, especially organizer Lavonia Waddington. We provided more than 600 sandwiches and 600 desserts to the residents of local shelters. We also distributed hundreds of emergency breakfast packets to school nurse's offices throughout the city. And many TPS families joined the March for Justice, Jobs and Education.

January 30 Birthday Breakfast: It's the date for the January Birthday Breakfast for staff and students (grade 1-8) in the Multipurpose Room, 8-8:30am.

School Nurse Update:  Until we hire a new full-time nurse, we will have a registered nurses from Bayada Pediatrics here at TPS from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.  Bayada Pediatrics Care specializes in caring for children in a school setting.

TPS Tigers Basketball Tournaments: Plan to stop by the TPS gym on January 31 and February 7. The TPS Invitational Basketball Tournaments will be going on all day from 9am to 3pm. Go, Tigers!

Wintry Weather Rule of Thumb: If the School District of Philadelphia is closed because of snow or other severe weather, so is TPS. This rule also applies to mid-day closings and cancellations of after school activities. (However, if the District is closed already for professional development or some other non-weather-related reason, we will coordinate our decision with those of other area schools.)

FDC Families of Color Play Date: Sunday, February 8, 1-3 pm at the home of Shari Hersh and Sam Robinson, 2634 Parrish Street Phila, PA 19130. RSVP to [email protected].
