"Wild Learning"

By Frances Hoover, Director of Institutional Advancement

In his talk entitled "Wild Learning: The Benefits of Experiences in Nature" at the recent ADVIS TECHed Conference, Dr. Milton Chen encouraged schools to offer more place-based, outdoor ed opportunities.  Why talk about outdoor education at a tech conference? Dr. Chen believes that outdoor learning is even more important when students are surrounded by technology.

Dr. Chen is senior fellow and executive director, emeritus at The George Lucas Educational Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that uses its multimedia website, Edutopia.org, and documentary films to communicate a new vision for 21st-Century education. Dr. Chen’s career has spanned four decades at the intersection of preK-12 education, media, and technology.

For more information and ideas about engaging children through nature, Dr. Chen suggests reading How to Raise a Wild Child by Samuel D. Sampson.
