At TPS we weave Latino culture into our Spanish curriculum to enrich our students' experience. In the Kindergarten children have been learning about the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through food and stories. The holiday, which dates back to Aztec culture, is a time to feel comforted remembering those who have died.
Although traditionally most of the treats during this celebration are sugar-based, the Early Childhood Spanish team opted to have the children make healthy guacamole for snack time. Research shows that sensory experiences such as this make learning meaningful and therefore memorable for children. Stimulating all of their senses makes language learning tasty on the tongue as well.
