Blocks Boost Literacy

The Friday woodworking club, taught by TPS teachers Virginia Friedman and Rick Jacobsen, has been making, among other things, a set of wooden play blocks that were donated to a branch of the Free Library. On Friday, November 20, Alex Bender, Children's Librarian at Queen Memorial Library, came to the club to pick up the blocks from the woodworkers.

The blocks have been cut, sanded, and oiled by the kids. The set will be used in the library's Children's Department to boost literacy skills, especially among preliterate kids. Assembling blocks and other manipulatives has been shown to augment reading skills and the ability to put letters together to build words and understanding. Super cool!

Below are some photos of our woodworkers.
