December's 8th Grade Monthly Constitutional speaker was Theresa Timlin, a federal administrative law judge at the Department of Labor. Theresa (who is also a TPS parent) spoke to the students about her work, describing the kinds of cases she hears related to employment law.
The students had many questions related to the issue of raising the minimum age. Theresa guided them toward understanding just how much an individual working a minimum wage job earns per week and per year. Students also discussed the difference between the benefits provided to employees with a "regular job" at a company and those provided to tipped workers in restaurants, independent contractors, and workers in the "gig economy."
