Piffaro and Renaissance Instruments

In music this week, the 7th grade had a wonderful presentation by Joan Kimball and Bob Wiemkem of Piffaro, a Renaissance music troupe based in Philadelphia. Joan (who happens to be the parent of Elizabeth Kimball '98) and Bob shared a variety of Renaissance instruments – shawms, sackbuts, bagpipes, and recorders of many sizes – and explained how they evolved into some of the instruments in today’s orchestras.

The students connected this presentation to our Seeds of Change project by discussing how and why those evolutions came about and how various musical ideas, innovations, and styles developed through the interactions of cultures over centuries.
