After a week of studying the future of water in Philadelphia, the TPS Sustainability Institute participants boarded a plane to San Francisco today to examine the water crisis on the west coast.
In Philadelphia, participants kayaked on the Schuylkill River, simulated a UN Summit on water, and conducted chemistry experiments in the Delaware River. In San Francisco, they will help build a green water infrastructure, study water use at a sustainable farm in Marin County, and take part in a Giacomini Wetlands Field Study with rangers at Point Reyes Seashore.
This is the inaugural year of the TPS Sustainability Institute, which is run by 8th grade science teacher Wendy Furry. The Institute is a summer program designed to educate young leaders about pressing issues in environmental science. Participants will gain first-hand field experience in dramatically different ecosystems to order to gain a deeper understanding of one complex global issue each year.(photos below by Kate Riccardi)
