Community Service Letter to Families

Dear Families of 4th-8th Grade Students,

We hope the school year has gotten off to an excellent start for your family. As the coordinators of the Service Committee at TPS, we are writing to share information about this year’s program for 4th through 8th graders.

TPS believes that community service plays an essential role in the education of children. Throughout the school year we ask students to volunteer within our school community (internal service), in our greater city community (external service), or as part of a curriculum connection with their grade unit (service learning). We believe that these initiatives compel students to shift from an inward focus on themselves to an outward focus on others. Through this process, children develop a stronger sense of compassion, empathy, and personal responsibility. By making community service a priority at the school, we believe we will build a stronger, more vibrant, and more inclusive school community.

There are many supervised internal service jobs offered to 4th through 8th graders each day of the week for before, during, or after school, ensuring that your child will be able to fulfill his/her service obligation with minimal disruption to your family's routine. In addition, if your child participates in community service outside of school, he/she will be able to count that service toward the TPS service requirement. (This is a change in policy.) If your child plans on choosing this option, please indicate the organization/project they will serve on the sign-up form. We also ask that your child submit a brief typed description of the service activity and, if possible, a photograph. We hope that this new option will allow you and your children to fulfill the service requirement in the most meaningful and successful way.

This year, every TPS student in grades 4th through 8th is asked to complete two of three terms in the TPS Service (internal) Program or external service. Children are welcome to do both internal and external service!

  • Fall Term: Monday, September 26 to Friday, December 9
  • Winter Term: Monday, January 9 to Friday, March 10
  • Spring Term: Monday, April 10 to Friday, June 2
