The TPS Boys Basketball Team competed in the second annual Beyond Basketball Tournament hosted by Philadelphia Youth Basketball and Friends' Central School.
The tournament is held on MLK weekend and provides teams with educational breakout sessions to observe and appreciate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr.
On Saturday, the Tigers cruised to victory in the first two games. TPS advanced pass Kenderton Elementary School by way of forfeit and went on to defeat St. James School in the next round.
The Tigers were put to the test by the host team during Sunday's semifinal game. Friends' Central leveraged their home court advantage and jumped out to an early lead. The Tigers found themselves down 4 points with time quickly elapsing. Excellent defense led to a steal and two quick points. With only a few seconds left, TPS was able to force another turnover. The team scrambled, but the ball finally found its way to Ben King, who cooly and calmly knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer.
Sadly, during the championship game, tired legs took a toll on the Tigers. They were handed their only loss during tournament play by the team from Immaculate Heart of Mary. Congrats for working hard and earning second place!
