The Student Council’s Talent Show is an annual extravaganza run completely by our Student Council middle schoolers. They ran the auditions, created the performance list, set up the sound system, emceed the show, made sure the right song was cued for the right performer, and calmed nervous performers. The Student Council produced a 50-act show with more than 100 performers, ranging in age from 6 to 14, and with an audience of over 500.
Performing in the Talent Show is important to the children – and their performances are important to us as a school, for more reasons than the children might imagine. There were wide variations of proficiency - but each performer received the warmest reception. And some of our most bashful students stepped forward, stood in front of the mic or on the gymnastics mat, and bravely shared their gifts or passions with a HUGE, attentive, and appreciative audience. Sometimes an act fell short of the performer’s mark (a card trick that didn't work, a missed catch) or the producers’ expectations – but each child was appreciated by a good-natured audience.
Community support. Student voice. Student agency. And a good deal of fun. That’s the TPS Student Council Talent Show. Thank you to the Student Council for a job well done! (Photos by Beth Lundy)
