This morning’s Monthly Constitutional speaker was Maia Jachimowicz, Vice-President of Evidence-Based Policy Implementation at the nonprofit Results for America.
Maia and three others founded the charitable Philly Bail Fund, which is a revolving fund that posts bail for people who are indigent and cannot afford bail. The fund’s goal is to keep families and communities together and vigorously advocate for the end to cash bail in Philadelphia.
Maia spoke about inequity of cash bail systems, maintaining that Philadelphia needs to shift its bail system from a wealth-based one to a more fair and effective system based on a presumption of release before trial (except under the most exceptional circumstances).
Particularly compelling was hearing from Patricia Myrick, who spoke about the impact of cash bail on her own family and about the support provided by the Philly Bail Fund.
