On Monday, TPS alumni parent Melissa DePino visited Miriam and Josh’s third grade classroom to discuss an incident that took place last year at a local Starbucks. where two African American men were arrested after the store manager called police because they hadn’t ordered food or drinks.
Melissa tweeted a video of the police arresting two innocent men. The video went viral and sparked a nation-wide protest and the creation of From Privilege to Progress, an organization that encourages people to be anti-racist upstanders.
The third graders appreciated Melissa’s personal take on the incident, which they are including in this year’s play. Melissa introduced the group to the idea of bias, which directly related to the class discussion about racial profiling.
