In-Service Diversity Workshop

Shortly after the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, faculty and staff met together to discuss the issues surrounding the tragic incidents. Many teachers asked for more training and support around talking to students about race.  

Our faculty and staff in-service diversity workshop on February 17 will focus on this topic. We have invited Dr. Ali Michael of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania to facilitate the discussion.  A filmmaker and educator, she has a Ph.D. in teacher education from Penn and an M.A. in Anthropology and Education from Teachers College.  

Dr. Michael will help us explore the following topics:

  • Why it's hard and important to talk about race.
  • How racial identity development frames our experiences
  • How to support positive racial Identity development in the classroom
  • How to address specific race-related scenarios in the classroom
