To High School We Go

Each year our confident, creative, and well-prepared eighth graders navigate an important step in their educational journey – the high school admissions process. Teachers Ashley Opalka and Emily Marston counseled and supported families in determining the best school fit for each graduating student. The entire eighth grade teaching team was integral in helping students throughout the process as students prepared for applications, interviews, auditions, open houses and more.

While every year our students have gone on to attend many of the highly regarded public and private schools in the area, this year's process is distinguished by a few interesting trends.

Alums Talk High School

Each fall we invite alums currently in high school back to TPS to talk to 8th grade families about their experiences "beyond TPS." Ten alumni answered questions about their academic and social transition to high school, their current work load, and how they balance academics and extracurriculars.

They also spoke about upcoming school projects and other activities that they are looking forward to this year; these included playing in an upcoming soccer championship, taking a film history class, serving as the editor of the school literary magazine, traveling to Peru, organizing a travel abroad program, and performing in A Midsummer Night's Dream (for the second time - the previous time was at TPS!).

Alumni Panel on High School

Seventh and eighth grade parents, a reminder that we are hosting a TPS Alumni Panel on Monday, October 6, 7:15pm in the Middle School, where you and your children will have an opportunity to ask questions of current high school students attending a variety of public and independent schools.

This forum – hearing from TPS grads themselves about their high school experiences – should be a nice change from conversations with admission professionals!

Special thanks to our alumni who are coming out to TPS this evening. We expect alums from Science Leadership Academy, CAPA, Central, Friends Select School, St. Joseph's Prep, Germantown Friends School, Sacred Heart, Agnes Irwin, Springside Chestnut HIll, Friends' Central.

Please note that parking will NOT be available in the school lot.

High School Night

On September 22, 7th and 8th graders and their families came out for High School Night, at which they were able to talk to representatives from 16 schools. It’s also a popular event for TPS alumni, who came in great numbers to represent their high schools.

About 20 alumni accompanied their Admission Reps to talk about their choice of high school.

But 8th Grade Just Started . . .

Is it really time to think about high school? Well, yes, for our 8th graders, it is. We have an experienced team in place to shepherd 8th grade families through the high school admission process.

Some dates to remember:

October 6, 7:15pm, in the Middle School: High School Panel. We will have an opportunity to meet with TPS alumni who are currently attending area public and private high schools to continue the conversation about what the transition from TPS to high school is like and about our alums' experience at a variety of schools.
