JU-C Weekly Note

Dear Families,

We spent the first half of today in Family Circles, where students learned about pirates, participated in a scavenger hunt at the park using clues, and learned a song and dance.  The original plan was to have our usual fall event in Family Circles at Shelly Ridge, but as they are currently undergoing a large construction project, we changed our plans.  It was a beautiful morning to be outside!

During Community Meeting this week, we heard from three people about three organizations:  Michelle and Patrick McKenna (TPS parents) about the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, Sara Forgione (our nurse) about the Poor People’s Economic Rights Campaign and the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, and Andrew McKnight (TPS parent) about the Challenge Campaign.  Students were thoroughly engaged during the presentation and asked excellent questions about the ways in which the organizations made a difference.

We began writing about a hero in our family this week.  Students used class time to write a draft of their hero paragraph.  Next week we will learn how to edit our writing to improve it, and students will make changes and print a final draft to share with their peers.

As you know, our day at the Schuylkill Center was cut short.  We are beginning to discuss what our alternate plans might be for finishing the research project we started.  We will let you know when we decide what we are doing instead.  The Awbury Arboretum group will continue to go to Awbury.  This coming Thursday, they will again be partnering with Wissahickon Charter School.

We continued delving into Greek mythology.  We read more of Three Times Lucky — students are eager to find out who committed the crime, and they laugh loudly at some very funny adventures Mo has along the way!  We postponed the beginning of book groups with JU-D until next week, as this week had too many unusual events (Picture Day, Family Circles) to really begin properly.

It is almost time for parents conferences — we look forward to talking with you soon about how the year is going for your child.

Have a good weekend!

Laura and David
