JU-C Weekly Note

Dear Families,

What a busy week!

During Community Meeting this week, we heard from attorney Molly Tack-Hooper from the ACLU of Pennsylvania, who talked about a transgender student who challenged gender inequality at his high school and about two middle school students who challenged their middle school's ban on bracelets designed to promote breast cancer awareness among young people. We heard from Peter Gonzales from the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, who discussed the organization's work with immigrants and new citizens who are establishing themselves and their families in the Philadelphia region. And we heard from TPS’ own David Hudson, who spoke about his counseling and training programs as senior pastor of Restore Your Heart Ministries. We have loved having these talks to engage students in thinking carefully about what it means to be a hero!

Students also wrote about a hero in their families. We used an editing checklist to help students edit their own work and then a similar checklist used by a peer to edit. The final copy was therefore the third (or sometimes more) version. Some students seemed uncomfortable printing something that “wasn’t totally perfect,” but we said that’s what drafts are for — and that no first draft is finished yet. We’ll talk about student writing as part of parent conferences.

Our team met and decided that we will continue our research project at Awbury Arboretum, where we can work in a different space from the other group and can quickly formulate new research questions which can be researched before Thanksgiving. Because Awbury Arboretum was supposed to be used for another event this Thursday, we used the time to work at school, similar to the schedule we’ll have on winter Thursdays when we don’t go to our outdoor classroom. We will all be at Awbury this coming Thursday.

Book groups continued this week. Students are truly enjoying the opportunity to dig deeply into a book they expressed interest in. Ask your children what their book is about and what they enjoy about book groups.

We look forward to seeing you for parent conferences. Have a good weekend!
