Dear JU-D Families,
Fall is upon us! This is the time of year when we are finalizing a whole series of systems that will lay the groundwork for a rich investigation of our Chinese theme. One of these important systems is our Junior Unit social contract. To thrive in school students need a framework by which they can navigate interactions on both social and academic levels. Last week JU-D members began the process by agreeing on three concrete rules to bring to the entire Junior Unit. On Tuesday, each individual unit brought a proposal for a larger social contract. After viewing a large assortment of rules, students agreed on two of our three final rules to steer the year. The first two rules are "Do your best" and "Give, take, and honor." We will decide on the third and final guideline next week in community meeting.
Another routine that began this week was our new and improved word study program in collaboration with Jill Garland and the Learning Resources team. The week culminated in an assessment that checked for spelling and understanding of a list of geographical vocabulary. The Learning Resource team will use this and other information to help address needs for individualized support. Your children can provide more information about this new system in their Friday Folder reflection.
Outside of routines, students began a study of orienteering (navigation by compass) with an in-depth study of the compass. Mixed groups of Junior Unit students learned about different pieces of a compass and even built their own out of magnets, needles, and pieces of wax paper. Furthermore, we also delved into the all-school theme of survival as we began to discuss the way we can use tools both to find our way home when lost and to survive in the elements.
Lastly, we want to make parents aware of the upcoming Back-to-School Night, which will take place on September 28, 6:30-8:30 p.m. This is a time to discuss in detail the systems we have put in place and to delve into the ways both teachers and parents support student learning in JU-D. You can expect to receive a link to a Doodle poll to sign up for parent-teacher conferences a day or two after Back-to-School Night.
We hope you enjoy the wonderful early fall weather this weekend!
