JU-D Weekly Note

October 16, 2015

Dear JU-D families,

Wow, what a whirlwind week! We had another excellent four days of learning in JU-D. To kick things off, we looked at the role of setting in our class read aloud book, The Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. We took virtual tours of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and experimented with setting in our own writing. We also began to analyze heroes in our own world and in ancient Greek mythology. We wrote about what it means to be a hero, and even began to delve into Joseph Campbell’s Heroic Journey. This week also marked the launch of our guided reading book club. Students heard excerpts from four books (Ender’s Game, Bud Not Buddy, Stargirl, and A Wrinkle in Time) and had the opportunity to judge whether they would be “right fit” books. We will form groups and begin reading next week. Finally, we returned to our work of classroom construction and began to add meat to the bones of learning space.
