Dear Kindergarten Families,
This week was another of discovery, play, joy, and learning. We continued to get to know one another, learn each other’s names, make new friends, and learn classroom routines.
Our students went to their “specials” for the first time. We had Movement, Art, Spanish, Seed to Table, and Music. In music class, groups of 12 or 13 children spend time with Chris learning about different instruments and rhythms and make music together. Movement class with Bart integrates physical education and mindfulness practices. During art class with Kait or Catherine, children spend time in the art studio experimenting with different art materials and techniques. While Spanish is integrated into our classrooms every day, students spend time with Brian and Melissa with more focused Spanish activities each week.
We started getting to know the garden during our first “Seed to Table” class this week. Children went on a scavenger hunt and learned about some of the different vegetables, fruits, and herbs growing in the garden like eggplant, cucumbers, raspberries, tomatoes, and much more. During drop off and pick up, ask your child to give you a tour of the garden!
At The Schuylkill Center today we spent our time at an area called “Weil House.” We “hiked” from the bus, explored the area, observed lots of nature, and played around the trees and grass. Our goal for this first week at The Schuylkill Center was to help the children feel comfortable in nature and to learn how to play in a place that doesn’t have equipment. The children found all sorts of creatures, built forts, and enjoyed their day in our outdoor classroom.
Our Weekly Notes often include questions for you to ask your child to help begin conversations about what is happening in school. Here are some for this week:
- What did you do in Movement?
- What did you do in Art?
- What did you sing in Music?
- What was interesting/surprising/fun at The Schuylkill Center?
- Who did you enjoy playing with this week?
- Can you name two things about kindergarten you are looking forward to next week?
- Can you list at least three things that grow in the garden?
- Can you tell me two things your group does during Morning Meeting?
- What was one thing you enjoyed doing at Activity Time?
We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, October 5 at 6:30 pm for Back-to-School Night, when we will give you an overview of how our days are spent in kindergarten. There is a reception in the Garage at 5:30pm that same evening.
Please make a habit of checking the calendar above for important upcoming classroom dates as we will not write about each event.
Enjoy the weekend,
The Kindergarten Team
