6th Grade Weekly Notes

Greetings, 6th Grade Families!

A focus this week connects to our thematic study of Africa. We have been working on recognizing and exploding stereotypes. By reflecting on our own assumptions about Africa, and looking at stereotypes that Kenyan teenagers have about Americans, we have begun the process of opening our minds to new and more accurate understandings of the bright continent and ourselves. In language arts, students have been tasked with taking a typical activity of theirs and writing a description with an “exotic” twist. How would this look to an alien or to someone from another culture? We also continued our exploration of the Wissahickon by independently observing and wondering about the geology and human-made elements we discovered, while in math, we have been working on fractions.

6th Grade Reminders:

The 6th grade is going on an overnight camping trip, and due to a last-minute conflict, our dates have changed! We will now depart from TPS on Wednesday, October 19 and return by the end of the school day on Thursday, October, 20. The permission slip and packing list will be given out the week before.

Back-to-School Night is next week! On Wednesday, September 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., you are invited to come and meet the 6th grade teachers and visit the space where your children spend their days. We look forward to meeting you!

Fall Community Service jobs have been pushed back one week and will begin on Monday, October 3. Students will learn their assignments next week. Be aware that all students must perform community service at least two of the three trimesters.

Questions to ask your 6th grade child:

  • Have you observed any humans recently performing strange rituals? Please explain!
  • Where in the world could a person find a McDonalds, a frozen landscape, a car factory, and a beautiful beachside resort?
  • What do you wonder about the Wissahickon?
  • How do you find working with fractions?

Reminder: Next week is the last week to try out for Mixed Choir. We have a great group of students already coming. Click here to download more information and the commitment form for the fall semester. Forms for Mixed Choir members should be returned to Shannon by October 5.
