Good afternoon, parents!
Congratulations on surviving and thriving in our first full week of school! It’s been a great one here in the seventh grade . Here are some highlights.
In cultural studies (CS) this week, we discussed what “colonization” means in preparation for our upcoming unit on the Age of Exploration. As part of their CS homework this weekend, students are interviewing an adult about a generational memory from their lifetime. Be sure to ask your child who he/she is interviewing and what generational memory he/she learned about (maybe it’s you!).
As part of studying ratios and proportions in math this week, we made models of polygons, scaling them up to twice their size. We will use this to investigate similar figures with a view to making a map of the Pine Plantation at the Schuylkill Center.
In science this week, we discussed lab safety procedures and precautions. On our first trip to the Schuylkill Center, we took observational notes and collected samples as the first step in generating brochures for prospective visitors to the Center.
In language arts, we continued our review of grammar with nouns and pronouns. We also connected to the CS discussion of generational memory by discussing the events of September 11, 2001, and how they have affected the lives of Americans and people around the world. The class’s composure, thoughtfulness, and engagement during those lessons were amazing. Thank you to all who continued those conversations and that processing with your children at home.
Finally, a couple important announcements.
First a reminder that you are invited to High School Night, here at TPS on Monday, September 19. (This is an annual event, so don't worry if you don't attend this one.)
Second, Fall Community Service forms will be distributed digitally this afternoon. You can find the link below, on the TPS homepage, in the Progressive Edge email, and on the TPS Blog. The linked letter describes the service requirement, dates of the three terms, and outlines a major change regarding external community service going into effect this year. Please read the letter and submit your child’s service job preferences via the linked form by this Monday, September 19.
We hope you have an excellent weekend! Until next week,
Jake, Melanie, Steve, and David
