Seventh Grade Weekly Note

Good afternoon, parents!

This week math classes continued to explore ratios and proportions and are getting ready to look at the measurements they made in the Pine Plantation on Tuesday. Classes will have to discuss and make decisions about how to determine their most reliable measurements, given the (mostly) unavoidable errors in our measuring. In Language Arts we’ve continued our work on parts of speech with pronouns and verbs. In Cultural Studies we’ve looked at some primary source documents from the Age of Exploration to try to understand what Portuguese explorers thought about the “New World” and its people when they arrived, as well as why they wanted to leave Portugal in the first place.

As mentioned in previous notes, Back-to-School Night for 7th grade is next Wednesday, September 28. The evening starts with a reception in the Lombard Street school yard from 5:30-6:15 p.m. Matt Eskin, Carlye Nelson-Major, and Yves Kabore will speak briefly at 6:15 p.m., before 7th grade parents head directly to the new 7th grade classrooms. In Jake and David’s space we will cover the Essential Questions and curriculum arcs that will guide our instruction throughout the year. There will also be a brief lesson from each teacher to demonstrate our different teaching styles, as well as time for questions about the year and life in the 7th grade. If you have specific questions about your child, please schedule a separate meeting or use your time during Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 3 and 4.

Reminder: Next week is the last week to try out for Mixed Choir. We have a great group of students already coming. Click here to download more information and the commitment form for the fall semester. Forms for Mixed Choir members should be returned to Shannon by October 5.

We hope you have a safe and happy weekend,

David, Melanie, Jake, and Steve
