8th Grade Weekly Note

CUBA TRIP IMPORTANT REMINDER: All 8th grade parents are asked to fill out this form so we know where everyone is in the passport application process. Parents were asked to begin this process by October 15 in order for passports to be processed by regular mail.  If you have not started the process, please do so now! Late processing will make it impossible to obtain visas. If you have any questions or need additional support, contact Matt Eskin. Below is the link to passport information that we provided previously:

Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

Monday evening’s Alumni Panel was such fun and so informative. Ten alumni from a variety of area schools shared tips on the application process, the transition to high school, favorite projects, and reflections on the balance they are achieving between the workloads and extra-curricular activities. Parents and students were able to meet one-on-one with these students to ask questions and get more of a sense of what a school's curriculum and program look like beyond the freshman year. It is always wonderful to see how impressive our alumni are.

This morning we completed the process of defining a social contract for students and teachers in the Middle School. Each grade proposed four or five tenets, and representatives of each grade met over several lunch periods to hammer out the final version. This morning we signed the contract, striving to uphold the following:

  • Respect The Philadelphia School as a learning community.
  • Have a growth mindset.
  • Be responsible.
  • Accept each other (we all relate in our own way).
  • Step out of your comfort zone.

Our work now shifts to understand what these tenets look like in our classes and in our community as a whole.

Lunch meetings this week included admission representatives from Penn Charter on Wednesday and Friends Select School on Thursday; these are the final meetings of the admission season. We are grateful that a number of parents have joined us for these opportunities to dig deeper into both the admission process and each school’s unique attributes.

Parent conferences are fast approaching. Please let your child’s advisor know if there are specific topics and issues you’d like to make sure are discussed on November 3 or 4. If you have forgotten when your conference is scheduled or need to make a change, please contact your child’s advisor directly.

We are proud to have a number of eighth graders acting as school ambassadors for open houses this month and for the PAIS accreditation team visit next week. Thank you to Abdullah Gackou, Ari Burstein, Blayre Walters, Sophie Cucinotta, Eli Lerner, Isaiah Waddington, Molly Connolly-Unger, Olivia Garces, Gray Kearns, Luke Cooper, Diego Spielman-Rodriguez, Vanessa Bruno Williams, Jules Nasser, Tate Park, and Ella Webb for devoting time and effort to this work.

We are looking forward to next week’s visitors from the PAIS accreditation team. They will be with us from Sunday afternoon until Wednesday and will be visiting classes and meeting with all constituencies at our school. Please welcome them; you may see them at arrival and dismissal!

Have a restful weekend!

Emily, Ashley, Ethan, and Wendy
