8th Grade Weekly Note

Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

We were delighted to see so many of you at High School Night! We hope you were able to collect the information you needed about applications and had a chance to speak with admission officers and our alumni representatives.

The online application process for PUBLIC schools will open on the School District website September 29. Please make sure to have your public schools chosen before accessing the application as you can only do this process once. Please remember to send us a copy of your application so we know to which schools we should send the student data forms required on our end. Those applying to Central, Palumbo, Bodine, and Carver also need to submit an essay (one page written or typed) answering three questions: Who am I? What do I hope to accomplish in high school? and What can I contribute to my high school? Ashley and Emily will be happy to review these essays; we will ultimately submit them with the data transcript. Those applying to Science Leadership Academy must sign up for an interview by calling the school directly; a presentation of a project is required. Again, we will work with those students to refine and practice their presentations. Those applying to Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) or the Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP) will have to audition in the late fall.

For those applying to PRIVATE schools, now is the time to sign up for either the SSAT or the ISEE. We recommend taking them in either October or November, so there is time to retake the test in December, if necessary. The scores can be sent directly to the schools to which you apply OR you can just have them sent to you and released to schools later (at an additional charge). The link to online registration for the these standardized tests is as follows: http://www.ssat.org/ and https://www.erblearn.org/parents/admissions-testing-isee. For those students who need special accommodations, please note what documentation is required and which sites and dates are appropriate.

As you settle on private school applications, please send us the following pieces of the application: the transcript release form and the recommendation forms with your signature but without specific teachers’ names written in. These forms should be given directly to Terri O’Connor, the school registrar.

We were delighted to have admission representatives from Germantown Friends School and Science Leadership Academy meet with interested students and parents this week at lunch time. We learned a great deal about each school’s academic and extracurricular programs; our students asked incisive questions and seemed to enjoy thinking about next steps. Next week we’ll meet with The Shipley School on Wednesday and Roman Catholic High School on Friday. These lunch gatherings take place in Emily and Ashley’s room in the Middle School from 12:05 to 1:00 p.m. Please feel free to attend.

There is an open house at Penn Charter on Thursday, October 6, 8:30-10:00 a.m., for prospective families. As an incentive, Penn Charter will waive the application fee for prospective families who attend this open house.

Crefeld is holding open houses on Friday, September 30, at 8:45 a.m., and on Friday, November 4 at the same time. If you are interested in looking at a truly progressive high school program, Crefeld is worth consideration.

For those families interested in boarding schools, the Mid-Atlantic Boarding Schools reception will be held in Wayne on Monday, October 17. This is a great way for families (7th and 8th grades) to learn about boarding school in a low-stress and educational setting. Registration can be found at www.midatlanticboarding.com/events.

We look forward to seeing you at Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 28. The evening will begin with a reception in the Lombard school yard from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., followed by informal remarks from Assistant Head of School Matt Eskin, Associate Head Carlye Nelson-Major, and Division Director Yves Kabore. Eighth Grade parents will then move directly to Ashley and Emily’s room in the newly renovated Middle School. From 6:35 to 7:15 there will be a Cuba trip presentation and an opportunity to ask questions. From 7:15 to 8:30 we will present our 8th grade program with visits from Specialists. Online schedules for conferences on November 3 and 4 will be sent to you on September 29.

Reminder: Next week is the last week to try out for Mixed Choir. We have a great group of students already coming. Click here to download more information and the commitment form for the fall semester. Forms for Mixed Choir members should be returned to Shannon by October 5.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Emily, Ashley, Ethan, and Wendy
