Dear Eighth Grade Parents,
We have had a wonderful opening to the school year! As we’ve shared summer adventures, hopes for the coming year, and summer work, it is clear that the students have put a great deal of time and energy into both play and work. We number thirty-six students in 8th grade, a number to remember when making plans for celebrations throughout the year.
We welcome Ashley Opalka as a full-time member of the 8th grade teaching team this year. She will focus on language arts, high school placement, Shakespeare productions, and Latin! We are delighted!
We look forward to meeting with you in the next few weeks to debrief the results of last May’s ERB testing and to get a sense of what high schools you are thinking about for next year. Please email Emily (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have forgotten when you are scheduled for these conferences or need to make a change. High School Night will be here at TPS on Monday, September 21 at 7:15 pm; we are expecting 20 independent and public schools to be present. This is an evening for both you and your child/ren to learn more about the admission process in general and about these schools in particular.
If you are interested in doing a little research on the public school options for high schools in Philadelphia, the link to this year’s high school directory is as follows: www.phila.k12.pa.us/students and click on the directory of high schools.
The Public School Fair will be held at The Philadelphia Convention Center at 1101 Arch Street on Friday, October 16, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturday, October 17th from 9:00 am to 3 pm. Representative from School District high schools will be available to provide information about high school options and answer questions.
On Monday, October 19, we will have an opportunity to meet with TPS alums who are currently attending area public and private high schools to continue the conversation about what the transition from TPS to high school is like and more about the students’ experience at a variety of schools. The panel is arranged for 7:15 pm in the Middle School.
This morning was our opening assembly at which the 8th graders announced the all-school theme for the year. Make sure to ask your child all about it!
Sport teams practice will begin on Monday afternoon, September 14. Students are reminded to wear appropriate clothing and shoes as well as having medical forms and sport contracts in to the school. Study hall on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (3:20 to 4:10 pm) will not begin until September 22 to allow us to use the 8th grade spaces for ERB conferences.
Next Tuesday, September 15, we will be heading to The Schuylkill Center for the first time. Just a reminder that students will need to bring along a trashless lunch, a water bottle, sturdy hiking shoes, and an outfit that can get muddy and will hinder exposure to ticks. Tick checks are a part of our routine each Tuesday and will be important to repeat at home. One last reminder that gum, candy, and sodas are not permitted at TPS.
We look forward to working with this energetic and thoughtful group of students as they take on the responsibilities and privileges of leadership this year.
Have a restful weekend!
Emily, Wendy, Ethan, and Ashley
