Parents @ TPS

Parents and guardians are essential partners in making The Philadelphia School a place in which our learners can thrive. We benefit from community members who donate their time, expertise, and energy to support our students, faculty, and staff.

There are many ways that parents and guardians can get involved at a level that fits their schedule and interests – from joining a committee to chaperoning a trip, to helping teachers organize classroom celebrations, to being a guest speaker in the classroom or at a parent education gathering.

All parents and guardians are automatically members of our parents association – The Philadelphia School Association (TPSA) –  whose mission is to support TPS families by facilitating communication between home and school, providing enrichment and outreach opportunities, and sponsoring community-building events.

TPSA committees include

BOOK FAIR

The Book Fair Committee organizes this annual event, which serves as a fundraiser for TPSA. We recruit guest readers, plan special events, and work with the vendor to incorporate books about the all-school theme to enhance this celebration of books for the TPS community. The committee also coordinates parent volunteers to staff the fair and assist teachers, students, and families when they visit.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Outreach Committee coordinates hands-on service opportunities for parents and children. Initiatives have included holding book drives for the CHOP Early Head Start program, coat drives for residents of local shelters, and food drives for food pantries.

COMMUNITY RESPONSE

This committee mobilizes the TPS community to assist families in need with a variety of types of support. We encourage families and teachers to notify the committee if a need exists. And we encourage families to turn to their child’s teacher or division director if they need support during a difficult time.

ELDS (EXPLORING LEARNING DIFFERENCES AND STYLES)

ELDS brings together and supports parents of children with learning differences and unique learning. It liaises with the TPS Resources Team to promote communication between the school and families regarding issues related to learning.

EVENTS & HOSPITALITY

This committee helps to plan and organize the many events TPSA coordinates throughout the year.

FAMILY DIVERSITY COMMITTEE

The Family Diversity Committee promotes a culture of inclusion among families and provides a space where all families can come together and share their experiences. The committee also works closely with the school's Board Diversity Committee and TPS Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to discuss and support diversity-related programs.

GREEN & HEALTHY TEAM

The Green and Healthy Team works to ensure a healthy and sustainable learning environment. Its focus is on increasing awareness of environmental and sustainability issues and on assisting administration to research and implement green solutions. The team also advises the Student Green & Healthy Ambassadors team, which is part of the TPS community service program, and it organizes the annual TPS Earth Day celebration.

NEW FAMILY WELCOME

Starting at a new school, whether at the Preschool, Kindergarten, or upper grade levels, can be a unsure time for parents and children alike. The New Family Welcome Committee works with the TPS Admissions Office to coordinate events and provide mentor support during the summer and throughout the year to help families transition into the TPS community.

PARENT EDUCATION

This committee works with the school to research, recommend, and plan relevant presentations and talks on topics of interest to the TPS community. Past topics have included Spanish instruction at TPS, as well as broader subjects, such as current research on topics as diverse as sleep, social media, body image, and bullying.

PHOTO BOOK

This committee organizes and creates photo books for each grade; the books are sold as a fundraiser to support the school's financial assistance program.

PICTURE DAYS

This committee supports TPS with logistics and volunteer recruitment to help student picture days run as smoothly as possible.

THANKSGIVING FEAST

This committee supports the preparation of the school’s Thanksgiving Feast, a long-standing and treasured student and faculty event.
