Dear Primary A Families,
As Primary A students work to grow into a community of learners, we continue to expand our reading skills and strategies. We worked this week in guided reading groups to look closely at strategies that keep us developing as readers. Tailoring phonics skills with reading strategies for each group allows us to meet the students where they are. We practiced strategies like predicting, confirming predictions, reading for fluency, and answering questions about stories. As your child reads at home, please ask him/her questions about the setting; the characters; beginning, middle, and ending details; and his/her favorite part. These questions are a wonderful way to generate discussions about books.
We had another beautiful day at The Schuylkill Center. Our center educators, Damien and Eduardo, taught an engaging lesson about how animals survive the winter. The students were extremely excited about the animal skins, bird feathers, and animal skulls that were passed around for them to observe. These items included a fox skin, coyote skin, and deer skull. The students learned how all these materials helped the animals adapt to winter conditions. Ask your child for more information and insights! During this time of thanksgiving, we took some time to think about the wonderful lessons that The Schuylkill Center educators have taught us. We wrote heartfelt letters, made beautiful drawings for Eduardo and Damien, and enjoyed giving them out personally.
We hope (pending weather) to go to The Schuylkill Center on Wednesday, Dec. 7. A surprise we have planned for the children is roasting marshmallows over a fire. The ingredients of the marshmallows we will purchase are at the bottom of this note. Please let us know if you have any concerns about your child consuming any of these ingredients.
This week, ask me:
… about the Encuentro ballet performance;
... the pilot who came to talk about his job and how it is affected by air and weather;
….about our cornbread baking and how the building smelled because of it (mmmmmm...).
* Book Fair, November 30 - December 3. See the Progressive Edge for details!
* Tuesday, December 13: TPS Winter Concert and Learning Celebration. The Primary Unit Chorus will be singing three songs for their Winter Concert. Please feel free to ask them about the songs, and maybe they’ll give you a preview! Here is the link to the songs the Primary Unit will be singing. Concert attire is black on the bottom, red on the top. TPS t-shirts are perfect. Otherwise, no graphics, if at all possible. A red dress is also fine if students want to dress up.
Have a thankful weekend,
Cinda and Bernadette
