The Weekly Note has some new features. Above this note, you will notice the "Primary Calendar." Please check the calendar regularly for important upcoming events. We will provide details about those events in the Weekly Note or via email. To the right of this note is our online photo gallery. We will be adding new pictures every week, so be sure to check it out.
Dear Primary A Families,
This week in Primary A was a very productive one! We introduced the CAFE Menu (C = comprehension, A = accuracy, F = fluency, and E = expanding vocabulary). We took some time to discuss what each letter stands for and why it is so important for us to use these strategies to grow as readers. We took a close look at comprehension by reading a book titled Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun (Having the Courage to Be Who You Are) by Maria Dismondy. It was clear that the students could make text connections and predictions as we read the book aloud.
We wrote out our hopes and dreams for ourselves, thinking about what we wished we could accomplish this year. Many of us hoped to improve our reading skills. We are confident that we will work hard this year and accomplish our goals! We learned about rewriting to get a good copy so that we could publish our writing. Publishing in our classroom involves creating work that will be read by others in some form. Be on the lookout for our Hopes and Dreams writing posted on our classroom walls.
In math, first graders are working to count pennies and nickels along with learning to utilize one of our math tools, the number rack, to add numbers to 10. It was delightful to see the first graders begin to pick up traction with quickly recalling facts using the number rack. The second graders began working in our Number Corner with problem solving and keeping track of number patterns that emerged. We have been working with combinations to 20, an important skill to solidify this year. We practiced finding multiple ways to write equations that fit representations of beads on a number rack, all of which total 20.
Primary A is continuing to build a classroom community that is filled with lots of fun learning!
- Picture Day is Tuesday, September 27.
- Back-to-School Night is October 5, 2016. We look forward to giving more detailed information about the school year!
This week, ask me about Encuentro, about our special guest and their read-aloud books, about The Schuylkill Center and our observational pictures, and about the patterns I noticed on the September calendar (gr.1) and about how to play Nim (grade 2).
Enjoy this beautiful first fall weekend!
