Dear Primary B Families,
Wednesday marked our last "official" visit to The Schuylkill Center. (We are planning one more trip to our country classroom on Wednesday, 12/7. More information on that below.) We began with a brief activity about extreme weather. We helped the children group themselves based on what type of extreme weather they were interested in learning about. Then each group read about its type of extreme weather and acted out the various conditions and effects of that weather. Later, we met with Schuylkill Center educators for a lesson on how certain animals are adapted to survive different types of weather. It was quite fitting with our all-school theme!
We hope (pending weather) to go to The Schuylkill Center one final time on Wednesday, 12/7. As a surprise treat, we are planning to roast marshmallows. Listed below are the ingredients of the marshmallows we will purchase. Please let us know if you have concerns about your child consuming any of these ingredients.
Dandies Marshmallow: ALL VEGAN, Tapioca Syrup, Cane Sugar, Filtered Water, Tapioca Starch, Carrageenan, Soy Protein, Natural Vanilla Flavor. Contains: Soy. Gluten Free.
Elyon Marshmallows Fat & Gluten Free: Sugar, corn or tapioca syrup, water, kosher fish gelatin (from nile perch or tilapia), corn or tapioca starch, natural vanilla flavors.
Today we baked cornbread for the annual TPS Thanksgiving Feast. We used our reading and math skills to follow the recipe and measure out ingredients. We will freeze the cornbread over the weekend and contribute it to the feast on Tuesday, 11/22, during our regular lunch time. (There is no need to pack a lunch on Tuesday!)
This afternoon we welcomed Captain Diron Binns, a first officer for JetBlue airlines, into our classroom to lead a presentation on how weather affects planes. Captain D taught us how a plane uses air to take off, what types of weather pilots try to avoid flying in, and about the different parts of a plane. He then answered our students' questions, such as, "What's it like to fly through a cloud?" and "How do you remember which button does what?"
Mark your calendars! The Primary Unit Winter Concert and Learning Celebration will be on Tuesday, 12/13. We will begin the program at 9:00 a.m. with a concert in the Garage featuring the Primary Unit Chorus, Third Grade Chorus, and Junior String Ensemble. We expect the concert to be approximately one hour. Children should wear solid red on top and solid black on the bottom. Red dresses and TPS T-shirts are okay. No sweatshirts or graphics, please.
Be sure to ask your child:
- What type of extreme weather did you learn about?
- What animals did you learn about with Mr. Damien and Mr. Ed? What objects did you get to pass around?
- What did you bake for the Thanksgiving Feast?
- What song are you going to perform at the Feast?
- What did you learn from Captain D?
- What are some ways you have learned to edit your writing?
- How do you use the "skip and return" word attack strategy?
Since this will be our final note before the Thanksgiving break, we want to express our gratitude for your partnership so far this year. We are lucky to be a part of a supportive community that shares a common goal for children. Thanks!
