Dear Primary B Families,
Our trip to Crystal Cave was a rockin' good time. We began our visit by watching a short film about the history and geology behind Crystal Cave. Led by a trusty guide, we then spelunked our way through the the cave, stopping at various points to learn about different cave formations. Ask your child to tell you about some of the objects the stalactites and stalagmites resembled. For a challenge, see if your child can explain how stalactites and stalagmites are formed.
In Writing Workshop we are continuing to work on our small moment personal narratives. This week we learned strategies for determining if a story idea is too broad (which we call a "watermelon topic") and how to narrow that big idea down to one, exciting moment within that topic (which we call a "seed story"). Help your child brainstorm "seeds" from the weekend to write about at school.
We closed our week with a fun-filled "Mystery Morning" in our Family Circles. The children participated in a scavenger hunt, learned a funny song and dance, and had a special assembly. Have your child tell you about some of the clues he or she needed to solve during the scavenger hunt.
Family-teacher conferences are coming up on November 2nd and 3rd. There will be no school for students, and childcare will be provided during your conference time slot. We are hoping to use this time to share our beginning of the year observations of your child's strengths and areas for growth, as well as provide an opportunity to answer your questions and discuss any topics you are wondering about. We are also looking forward to getting to know all of you a little better!
Finally, due to the information Justine shared via email regarding The Schuylkill Center, we are working to come up with alternative field sites for our Rocks and Minerals study. We will stay in close communication as we finalize our plans. For next Wednesday, please have your child prepare for school as you would for a day at The Schuylkill Center: trashless lunch, full water bottle, and appropriate attire.
Important Dates and Reminders:
Our Halloween celebration will take place on Friday, October 30, from 8:35-9:15 in the gym . Please be sure your child's costume is "weapon"-free and that he or she has a change of clothes for after the celebration. Parents are welcome to attend, but should not feel obligated. Students who do not or who choose not to celebrate Halloween will participate in an alternative Mystery-related activity. Check your inbox for an email from The Philadelphia School entitled "Halloween at TPS" for more information.
We hope you have a relaxing weekend,
Becca and Jordan
