Dear Primary B Families,
Thank you for signing up for a fall conference on November 2nd or 3rd. If you have not done so yet, please check your inbox for an email from The Philadelphia School with the subject line "Scheduling Fall Conferences." Follow the link next to "Primary B" to select a conference time.
We had another awesome week! On Monday we launched our first Writing Workshop unit on "small moment" personal narratives, which are pieces about seemingly everyday incidents that we transform into exciting, detailed stories. Some "small moment" topics in our class include losing a tooth, having a pillow fight, and competing in a swim meet. Over the long weekend, remind your child to be on the lookout for "small moments" to turn into stories on Tuesday.
In Reading Workshop we learned how to "shop" for good-fit books in our classroom library. Have your child demonstrate the "5-Finger Rule" for you with a book from home. This is a great strategy to use when your child selects books to borrow from the library or to buy from a store. We also learned the comprehension strategy, "Check for Understanding." To practice this skill while reading at home, have your child pause after reading a page or two and tell you the who and the what: who the character is in the story and what he or she is doing.
We were able to take full advantage of our country classroom on Wednesday. We began our lesson with a short hike down to a shallow stream. Once there, each child found one rock on land and fished a second rock out of the stream. The children then described and compared the rocks' shapes, sizes, and textures. Be sure to ask your child what happens to the characteristics of rocks that have been in water for long periods of time and what this process is called. (Hint! It starts with an "e" and rhymes with "berosion.")
Important Dates and Reminders: Picture Day for Primary B will be held on Tuesday, October 20th. Ordering photos can be done online. More information to come.
We are looking forward to our field trip to Crystal Cave in Kutztown, PA, on Wednesday, October 21st. Thank you to the many of you who volunteered to chaperone! Due to the high interest we decided to select names randomly, and the two slots have been filled.
We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, Becca Jordan
