Dear Primary C Families,
We can’t believe that January is already coming to an end! Please see last week’s note for important announcements about upcoming events in February and March: Reach Out and Read, Valentine’s Day, the TPS Talent Show, and our next Chorus Concert and Learning Celebration. Also, if your child has a summer birthday, now is a great time to celebrate his or her “half birthday” with our class. Please email us if you would like to schedule a time to come read the class in honor of your child’s special day.
Our winter theme study of “The City” is under way. Children have been sharing their background knowledge about cities; creating models to think about geographic terms such as city, state, country, and continent; and thinking about their wants and needs and how we access these things in our city. One of our next steps is to reflect more deeply on the challenges that make it difficult for some people in our city to satisfy their basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and education. We would love to invite guest experts into our class to talk more about these topics. If you have any personal or professional connections to organizations in our city that help people access these needs, please reach out to us to discuss ways we could include you as an expert in our study.
Here are some questions to ask your child about our week:
- What were some things you and your classmates identified as wants and needs?
- What does it mean to “make a mental image” while reading? How does this strategy help us as grow in our comprehension?
- What strategies have you been working on to convince your reader when writing a review?
- What topics have you been writing about this week?
Have a lovely weekend!
