Dear Primary D Families,
This week we launched our “City” theme and a new writing unit. In celebration of MLK Day on Monday we read about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. It has indeed been another fun and busy week in Primary D!
We read Nana in the City by Lauren Castillo and asked the children to share what they like about the city. The responses were wonderful and ranged from making new friends easily to being able to find a good cheesesteak!
In Writing Workshop we learned about forming an opinion and being persuasive. We read Click, Clack, Moo (a PrD favorite) and had a lively discussion about how the animals convinced Farmer Brown to meet their demands. The kids recognized that providing strong reasons for why you want something is a great way to convince someone. Ask your child how the class persuaded us to combine snack and read aloud today.
In Reading Workshop we added two new strategies to our C.A.F.E. Menu: infer and support with evidence and use punctuation to enhance phrasing. As you read with your child over the long weekend we hope you’ll give one (or both) of these strategies a try.
We encourage you to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at TPS on Monday. Desserts should be dropped off in the Garage between 9:30 and 11am. Stay tuned for information about upcoming community service opportunities for Primary Unit students and their families.
On behalf of the Primary Unit Parent Class Reps, we’re including another reminder about the Primary Unit Potluck. It will be held on Wednesday, January 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Garage. We hope you are able to attend.
Have a lovely weekend and we will see you on Tuesday, January 19.
