Primary D Weekly Note

Dear Primary D Families,

It was quite an exciting morning in Primary D! We had fun greeting each other in disguise and walking in the parade at Encuentro. Ask your child about his/her favorite costume of the day.

Our trip to the The Academy of Natural Science was informative and fun. We learned about fossils, the three types of rock and much more. We went on an exciting excavation at “The Big Dig” site and handled fossils and rocks of all kinds during a dynamic presentation by an Academy educator. Here are some questions/topics you may want to discuss with your child:

  • What is a fossil?
  • What’s the difference between a fossil and a bone?
  • In what type of rock are fossils usually found?
  • Describe the most interesting fossil or rock you saw at the museum.
  • Challenge: name the three different kinds of rock.

Next Wednesday we plan to go to the Wissahickon. Please send your child prepared for a day outdoors.

In Reading/Writing Workshop the children continue to write personal narratives. The topics have ranged from favorite family trips to playdates with friends. Ask your child what she/he has been writing about recently. We also added a new strategy to the CAFE menu: “skip the word and come back to it.” Ask your child to demonstrate one of the following strategies she/he has been learning about and practicing:

  • Check for understanding
  • Skip the work and come back to it
  • Use beginning and ending sounds
  • Cross checking

We have enjoyed meeting with many of you for parent conferences and look forward to the rest of our conferences on Monday and Tuesday. It’s always a pleasure to talk with you about your child’s experiences in Primary D.

We’ve noticed that the children are very excited about the school store, which is open on most Tuesday and Thursday mornings. It would be helpful for the class if children would only bring in money on those days to be spent at the store. Items cost between $.05 and $3.00. Please remind your child that all change should be stored safely in his/her backpack and taken home at the end of the day.

Please mark your calendar:

Tuesday, December 15 - The Primary Unit chorus concert will begin at 9am immediately followed by the Learning Celebration which will end at 11am.

Have a great weekend,

Niké and Ben
